Kudos to UFT retirees
published November 24, 2011
To the Editor:
Congratulations to the retirees who went to Ohio for a great victory in that state to protect collective-bargaining rights of teachers and other workers.
Also, congratulations to the hundreds of retirees who made many thousands of phone calls to Ohio to get out the vote for collective-bargaining rights and its preservation.
I am so proud as a 60-year member of the UFT of our retirees and the fantastic work they did to win in Ohio a truly great victory.
It was on Nov. 7, 1960 that the UFT went out on strike for collective-bargaining rights. We won that fight. As a result, we gave teachers in this country and throughout the world the inspiration to fight for their collective-bargaining rights.
Let us be proud of our union and our retirees who continue the fight we began 51 years ago.
Abe Levine, retired
