A vote for citizen’s rights

The following letter was sent to the New York Post:

To the Editor:

I am a proud UFT member who attended the voting rights rally on Dec. 10. I was proud to march for Ruthelle Frank of Brokaw, Wis.

Ruthelle is an 84-year-old woman who has voted in every election since 1948. But thanks to the voter disenfranchising laws passed by Koch-owned right-wingers like Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, she will not be able to vote this year.

Ms. Frank was born at home in 1927, so she doesn’t have the newly required birth certificate. Even though Ms. Frank has a certificate of baptism and her Social Security card, she cannot get one of those new state-issued IDs that was foisted upon Wisconsin by Gov. Walker.

And before you say that’s just one (too many) disenfranchised voters, there are 177,399 residents 65 and older who do not have state photo ID in Wisconsin alone. So, in reality the only baloney is being sliced and served by right-wingers like the Post.
