How do I obtain an application?

Undergraduate scholarship applications are available each fall from UFT representatives and guidance counselors in every New York City high school. Information regarding the graduate scholarships is mailed directly to all eligible undergraduate scholarship winners.

The applications ask for personal and family data, proof of family income, a personal statement written by the applicant and a section to be completed by the school. A school transcript and letters of recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors or other educators also are required.

Applications must be completed by mid-December of the senior year of high school and by mid-April for graduate applications.

How are winners selected?

Winners are selected by an impartial committee of educators. Approximately two-thirds of the college scholarships are awarded on the basis of high school average and class standing. The remaining awards are based on recommendations, the applicant’s statement, his/her potential and academic standing.

How are the scholarships paid?

For undergraduate winners who attend private colleges, payment is usually made to the college each semester. For undergraduate winners who attend public colleges, quarterly payments are made to the student upon proof of registration and attendance. For graduate scholarship winners, payment is made semiannually directly to the student upon confirmation of enrollment.
