Mission Statement

UFT Green Schools

The UFT Green Schools Committee is comprised of K-12 NYC public school educators. The mission of our Committee is to help design and support best management practices for greening NYC's public schools. We believe schools must take the lead in reducing our City's ecological footprint by providing our City's children, our future leaders, with an environmental education and exemplary environmental programs.

Our Committee will work to organize educators around sustainability, such as:

  • Developing an educational philosophy that promotes ecological literacy in our public schools.
  • Connecting students to their local ecosystem.
  • Sharing resources, such as lesson plans, environmental programs and field trips.
  • Supporting environmental practices, such as school-wide recycling and alternatives to foam trays.
  • Holding networking and planning meetings where we explore related topics and learn from guest speakers.
  • Advocating for educators working to green their schools, DOE and UFT buildings.
  • Conducting surveys to find what our needs are and how we can address them.

Join us in collaborating toward the promotion of the sustainable health of our natural world and human environment, starting with our public NYC schools.

We look forward to meeting you at our next meeting.
