Humane Education Committee
United Federation of Teachers Humane Education Committee (UFT/HEC) was formed in April 1989. We are one of numerous professional committees that offer teacher-to-teacher support to members of the New York City teachers' union-- the United Federation of Teachers. Our goal is to help educators, grades pre-kindergarten to twelve, bring humane, environmental and animal-rights philosophies and materials into their classrooms as a source of information for discussion and debate.
UFT/HEC offers teacher training workshops, newsletters, and resource materials. These services are designed to assist educators in developing classroom programs dealing with animals kept as human companions, wild or free-roaming animals, animals raised on farms and related dietary issues, as well as alternatives to the use of animals in education and research. We also offer information on the relationship between cruelty to animals and violence toward humans.
Humane education materials are readily blended with reading, writing, science, music and art programs. During the school year, we may offer essay and/or humane science contests for students in grades pre-kindergarten to twelve.
