Certificate Progams

The UFT Teacher Center offers certificate programs from Adelphi University, The College of Mount St. Vincent and New York Institute of Technology. These programs will not lead to NYS certification.

ADELPHI UNIVERSITY

Teacher Leadership: Strengthening Professional Practice Certificate Program
(18 credits)

The NYSUT Education and Learning Trust has partnered with Charlotte Danielson and Rick Stiggens, renowned authors in the field of leadership, to develop a sequence of courses designed to empower teachers to become more effective leaders in their schools, districts and communities. The program is designed for teachers who want to apply their knowledge and expertise to the larger community and is open to teachers who have either initial or professional certification.

  • Lead Teacher: A Framework for Teacher Leadership
  • Assessment for and of Learning
  • Mentoring and Coaching in the Midst of Change
  • Tools for Teacher Leadership: Analysis and Decision-Making
  • Tools for Teacher Leadership: Building Communication and Teamwork
  • Seminar in Educational Research for the Practitioner

This Teacher Leadership Certificate is awarded in collaboration with Adelphi University. The first course in the sequence, Lead Teacher: A Framework for Teacher Leadership, was developed in partnership with Charlotte Danielson.

BROOKLYN COLLEGE

Education Through the Arts Certificate Program
(12 credits)

The UFT Teacher Center in collaboration with Brooklyn College’s Puppetry in Practice Program offers this new certificate from Brooklyn College. The courses offer students the opportunity to learn about curriculum development, multicultural education and literacy with a strong emphasis on the integration of the arts into education. The program consists of four courses, the first two of which are offered this semester. These are graduate-level education credits. Students who complete the 12 credits in this program will receive a Brooklyn College Certificate.

NOTE: This is a Brooklyn College Certificate Program; it is not a NYS Extension Certificate.

BROOKLYN COLLEGE

Gifted Education Extension Certificate Program
(12 credits)

Brooklyn College’s School of Education is offering NYC teachers the opportunity to prepare for the Gifted Education Extension. This four-course, 12-credit program prepares teachers for the Gifted Certification Extension after completion of the program and successful passing of the New York State examination. Teachers must hold permanent certification and must take the Gifted and Talented Content Specialty Test (CST). Brooklyn College will nominate successful candidates who meet all requirements to the Department of Education for the Gifted and Talented Extension Certificate.

The first two courses are offered during this fall’s semester; the second two will be available in the Spring 2009 semester.

BROOKLYN COLLEGE

Students with Disabilities Extension Certificate
(12 credits)

The UFT Teacher Center and Brooklyn College have designed a Special Education Brooklyn College Certificate Program, consisting of four special education graduate courses, two of which are offered this semester. Students will receive a Brooklyn College Certificate of Completion for this program. (This is not a NYS Certificate.) Students who possess as BA or BS and a NYS teaching certificate, may apply to NYS Department of Education for a Students with Disabilities Extension Certificate upon successful completion of the 12 credits in this program as well as satisfaction of all NYS requirements.

COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. VINCENT

Middle Level Education
(9 credits)

This program provides teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to implement middle school philosophy and pedagogy.

Program requirements

  • EDUC 702 Education and Development of the Middle School Learner
  • EDUC 704 Curriculum in Middle School Education
  • EDUC 706 Applied Research in Middle School Education

Upon completion of the course of study, students are awarded an advanced certificate in the selected area of study. All advanced certificate programs are New York State-approved and are derived from the college’s Master’s Degree in Urban and Multicultural Education. Those interested in entering an advanced certificate program must hold a bachelor’s degree and obtain permission from the director of the graduate program prior to registering.

Students satisfactorily completing a certificate program and wishing to enter the master’s degree program may do so and have all 9 credits applied toward the master’s degree if the admissions requirements for the master’s degree program are met as stated in the college’s graduate bulletin.

COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. VINCENT

Instructional Technology And Global Perspectives
(9 credits)

This program is designed to enable elementary and secondary teachers to understand the culture and skills of information technology. It provides teachers with the knowledge, experience and confidence needed to become more technologically literate.

NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Certificate in Teaching 21st Century Skills
(15 credits)

The Teacher Center, in collaboration with New York Institute of Technology, is offering a 15-credit certificate in Teaching 21st Century Skills. This program is designed to prepare K-16 teachers to use technology in interdisciplinary teaching, employing authentic project-based curriculum and instruction. Taught by instructional technology practitioner faculty, the courses are designed to address 21st century skills and are offered in a variety of formats: online, virtual, video conference, in-person symposia and professional conferences. Candidates must hold a BA or BS degree and a NYS teaching certificate to participate.

NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Computers in Education
(18 credits)

The Computers in Education Certificate Program focuses on the use of media and computers in education. The certificate may be applied to the college's MS in Instructional Technology for eligible students. Participants are required to apply for admission to the college prior to the completion of 9 credits. Applicants must meet all college requirements for admission. An application fee is charged.

NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Student Behavior Management Certificate Program
(15 credits)

May be credited toward a Master of Science in School Counseling (Guidance).
The 15-credit Student Behavior Management Certificate courses are transferable to the master's degree program for students who apply and are accepted for admission.

School counseling is a profession that has transformed its focus to meet the needs of today's schools and tomorrow’s students. NYIT offers UFT members a 15-credit certificate in Student Behavior Management as an introduction to the profession of school (guidance) counseling. The purpose is to help classroom teachers, graduate students in school counseling and those seeking graduate courses to complete their permanent certification, and more effectively understand, manage and positively impact student behavior for the ultimate purpose of improving student achievement and student success in school.

Master of Science in School Counseling

Courses may be applied to the Master of Science in School Counseling if you subsequently apply to and are admitted to the NYIT master's degree program. Additionally, two elective courses (total of 6 credits) are offered. Earn 30 credits at the UFT and 18 credits at NYIT (Manhattan or Old Westbury campus) for a total of 48 credits for the MS in School Counseling.

Students' educational and social environments play critical roles in encouraging and sustaining optimal learning. The certificate in Student Behavior Management provides critical knowledge and skills teachers and future school (guidance) counselors to effectively guide student behavior in the classroom. Program courses and experiences build on an understanding of child and adolescent stages of growth, cultural contexts and social justice to enable the creation of safe and respectful school environments. The select courses enable understanding of the dynamics of student academic, career, and personal-social development and guidance and counseling strategies. Coursework provides practical strategies for educators to use to positively impact student success in school. Teachers' professional skills in advocacy, collaboration, teamwork, leadership, data-based decision-making and problem-solving are honed in the practical action-oriented assignments. In addition, course work integrates field experience and technology use in creative and meaningful ways.

The Student Behavior Management Certificate Program offers:

  • A 15-credit experience, focused on student behavior and learning.
  • A course of study that can be applied toward NYS School Counselor certification requirements.
  • Integrated field work that links theory with practice.
  • Opportunities to develop important technology skills.

NYIT Master of Science in School Counseling (Guidance) program offers

  • Ten required courses, totaling 30 credits (as listed above), may be taken through the UFT and credited toward the 48-credit master's degree program. The balance of six courses is to be taken on campus, at NYIT's full tuition rate.
  • Eligibility for provisional and permanent school counselor certification in New York State.
  • Development of competence in counseling, leadership, collaboration and teamwork, and data-driven decision making.
  • Field experiences, integrated throughout the coursework.
  • Expertise in using technological applications in school counseling to support students' growth and development.

ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

  • Candidates may be admitted by application for the summer or fall semester after meeting the requirements outlined in the NYIT graduate catalog or on the Web site.
  • Matriculation is required for both the Behavior Management Certificate and the Master's Degree program, upon completion of 6 graduate credits.
