Certificate Progams

The UFT Teacher Center offers certificate programs from Adelphi University, The College of Mount St. Vincent and New York Institute of Technology. These programs will not lead to NYS certification.

BROOKLYN COLLEGE

Education Through the Arts Certificate Program
(12 credits)

The UFT Teacher Center in collaboration with Brooklyn College’s Puppetry in Practice Program offers this new certificate from Brooklyn College. The courses offer students the opportunity to learn about curriculum development, multicultural education and literacy with a strong emphasis on the integration of the arts into education. The program consists of four courses, the first two of which are offered this semester. These are graduate-level education credits. Students who complete the 12 credits in this program will receive a Brooklyn College Certificate.

NOTE: This is a Brooklyn College Certificate Program; it is not a NYS Extension Certificate.

BROOKLYN COLLEGE

Gifted Education Extension Certificate Program
(12 credits)

Brooklyn College’s School of Education is offering NYC teachers the opportunity to prepare for the NYS Gifted Education Extension Certificate. This four-course, 12-credit program prepares teachers for the Gifted Certification Extension after completion of the program and successful passing of the New York State examination. Teachers must hold permanent or professional certification and must take the Gifted and Talented Content Specialty Test (CST). Brooklyn College will nominate successful candidates who meet all requirements to the Department of Education for the Gifted and Talented Extension Certificate.

BROOKLYN COLLEGE

Students with Disabilities Extension Certificate
(12 credits)

The UFT Teacher Center and Brooklyn College have designed a Special Education Brooklyn College Certificate Program, consisting of four special education graduate courses. Students will receive a Brooklyn College Certificate of Completion for this program. (This is not a NYS Certificate.) Students who possess a BA or BS and a NYS teaching certificate, may apply to NYS Education Department for a Students with Disabilities Extension Certificate upon successful completion of the 12 credits in this program as well as satisfaction of all NYS requirements.

Middle Level Education
(9 credits)

This program provides teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to implement middle school philosophy and pedagogy.

Program requirements

  • EDUC 702 Education and Development of the Middle School Learner
  • EDUC 704 Curriculum in Middle School Education
  • EDUC 706 Applied Research in Middle School Education

Upon completion of the course of study, students are awarded an advanced certificate in the selected area of study. All advanced certificate programs are New York State-approved and are derived from the college’s master’s degree in Urban and Multicultural Education. Those interested in entering an advanced certificate program must hold a bachelor’s degree and obtain permission from the director of the graduate program prior to registering.

Students satisfactorily completing a certificate program and wishing to enter the master’s degree program may do so and have all 9 credits applied toward the master’s degree if the admissions requirements for the master’s degree program are met as stated in the college’s graduate bulletin.

NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY—CUNY
DEPARTMENT OF CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY TEACHER EDUCATION

WBL/CTE Coordinator Extension Certificate
(6 credits)

This 6-graduate credit certificate program is designed for Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers who are seeking the NYSED extension certificate as Coordinator of Work-based Learning Programs. This is not a NYSED teaching certificate, but an extension of a NYSED CTE (grades 7-12) teaching certificate.

Applicants for the extension certificate must

  • hold a valid initial/provisional or professional/permanent teaching certificate in a CTE subject or technology education
  • complete six semester hours of coursework on coordination of:
    • Work-based Learning Programs for Career Awareness, and
    • Work-based Learning Programs for Career Development.

TUITION: The $941 tuition applies to NYS residents only. Non-residents pay $1,916 for each 3-graduate credit course. In addition, each course requires a $30 registration fee.

 
NYIT and the NATIONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION

GLOBAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT FACILITATOR CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
(9 credits)

A Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) is a person who incorporates career development information or skills in their work with students, adults, clients, employees or the public. Career Development Facilitator (CDF) training, offered through the National Career Development Association (NCDA), leads to a certificate of completion from the NCDA and eligibility for national certification from the Center for Credentialing in Education (CCE), a corporate affiliate of the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). The NYIT CDF training program is endorsed by the NCDA.

Required 3-credit courses for the GCDF certificate
  • EDCO 705 Career counseling and Lifestyles Development
  • EDCO 707* Advanced Career Counseling
  • EDCO 709 Advanced Studies in Workforce Development

Note: Candidates holding an MS in Counseling, or provisional/permanent school counselor certification, or who have successfully completed an equivalent introductory course in career counseling are exempt from taking EDCO 705.

Tuition/CDF Certification

Tuition for EDCO 705 and EDCO 707 is $1,275 per 3 graduate credit course, which includes NYIT tuition, NCDA CDF instructional materials, certification training, NCDA certificate of completion and a CCE eligibility fee. An additional $30 registration fee applies.

NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Certificate in Teaching 21st Century Skills
(15 credits)

The UFT Teacher Center, in collaboration with New York Institute of Technology, is offering a 15- credit Certificate in Teaching 21st Century Skills.

This program is designed to prepare K-16 teachers to use technology in interdisciplinary teaching, employing authentic project-based curriculum and instruction. Taught by instructional technology practitioner faculty, the courses are designed to address 21st century skills and are offered in a variety of formats: online, virtual, video conference, in-person symposia and professional conferences. Candidates must hold a BA or BS degree and a NYS teaching certificate to participate.

  • Web 2.0 and 3.0 applied in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology (STEM)

Student Behavior Management Certificate Program
(15 credits)

May be credited toward a Master of Science in School Counseling (Guidance).
The 15-credit Student Behavior Management Certificate courses are transferable to the master's degree program for students who apply and are accepted for admission.

School counseling is a profession that has transformed its focus to meet the needs of today’s schools and tomorrow’s students. NYIT offers UFT members a 15-credit certificate in Student Behavior Management as an introduction to the profession of school (guidance) counseling. The purpose is to help classroom teachers, graduate students in school counseling and those seeking graduate courses to complete their permanent certification, and more effectively understand, manage and positively impact student behavior for the ultimate purpose of improving student achievement and student success in school.

Master of Science in School Counseling

Courses may be applied to the Master of Science in School Counseling if you subsequently apply to and are admitted to the NYIT master’s degree program. Additionally, two elective courses (total of six credits) are offered. Earn 21 credits at the UFT and 27 credits at NYIT (Manhattan or Old Westbury campus) for a total of 48 credits for the MS in School Counseling.

Student Behavior Management Certificate offers
  • A 15-credit experience focused on student behavior and learning
  • A course of study that can be applied toward NYS school counselor permanent certification requirements.
  • Integrated field work that links theory with practice
  • Opportunities to develop important technology skills
Required courses in this certificate program:
  • EDCO 600* Introduction to School Counseling

  • EDCO 650 Social Justice, Diversity and Cultural Issues
  • EDCO 655 Contemporary Issues/Practices in Education and School Counseling

  • EDCO 680 Counseling and Cultural Competence in a Global Society
The NYIT Master of Science in School Counseling (Guidance) offers
  • Five required courses, totaling 15 credits (as listed above), plus additional elective credits, which may be taken through the UFT and credited toward the 48-credit master’s degree program. The balance of 27 credits is to be taken on campus, at NYIT’s full tuition rate.
  • Eligibility for provisional and permanent school counselor certification in New York State.
  • Development of competence in counseling, leadership, collaboration and teamwork, and data-driven decision making.
  • Field experiences, integrated throughout the coursework.
  • Expertise in using technological applications in school counseling to support students’ growth and development.

  • Candidates may be admitted by application for the summer or fall semester after meeting the requirements outlined in the NYIT graduate catalog or on the Web site.
  • Matriculation is required for both the Behavior Management Certificate and the Master's Degree program, upon completion of 6 graduate credits.
