The 15-credit Student Behavior Management Certificate courses are transferable to the master's degree program for students who apply and are accepted for admission.
School counseling is a profession that has transformed its focus to meet the needs of today’s schools and tomorrow’s students. NYIT offers UFT members a 15-credit certificate in Student Behavior Management as an introduction to the profession of school (guidance) counseling. The purpose is to help classroom teachers, graduate students in school counseling and those seeking graduate courses to complete their permanent certification, and more effectively understand, manage and positively impact student behavior for the ultimate purpose of improving student achievement and student success in school.
Master of Science in School Counseling
Courses may be applied to the Master of Science in School Counseling if you subsequently apply to and are admitted to the NYIT master’s degree program. Additionally, two elective courses (total of 6 credits) are offered. Earn 24 credits at the UFT and 24 credits at NYIT (Manhattan or Old Westbury campus) for a total of 48 credits for the MS in School Counseling.
Students’ educational and social environments play critical roles in encouraging and sustaining optimal learning. The certificate in Student Behavior Management provides critical knowledge and skills teachers and future school (guidance) counselors need to effectively guide student behavior in the classroom. Program courses and experiences build on an understanding of child and adolescent stages of growth, cultural contexts and social justice to enable the creation of safe and respectful school environments. The select courses enable understanding of the dynamics of student academic, career and personal-social development, and guidance and counseling strategies. Coursework provides practical strategies for educators to use to positively impact student success in school. Teachers’ professional skills in advocacy, collaboration, teamwork, leadership, data-based decision-making and problem-solving are honed in the practical action-oriented assignments. In addition, coursework integrates field experience and technology use in creative and meaningful ways.
