Workshops
The UFT is offering a number of workshops for educators.
Mandated Workshops
To help you fulfill Department of Education requirements for staff development and licensure, UFT Educational Programs offer a variety of workshops and seminars especially for new teachers:
Violence & Prevention Training
School staffers can use techniques and practical approaches to avoid and defuse violent situations in school. This workshop gives participants an understanding of the dynamics of assaultive, aggressive behavior and tools to avoid becoming victimized in school. The workshop meets the violence prevention training requirement of the NYS Department of Education for state certification. A $10 registration fee must be received at least two weeks prior to workshop date; non-members may enroll with a $25 money order. Members need to plan to arrive a half-hour early. No refunds will be made. Enrollment is limited to 35 participants. For information, call 1-212-598-7741.
Child Abuse Recognition Workshops
The state requires all teachers who are seeking initial or permanent state certification to take a workshop in how to recognize and report suspicion of child abuse. It covers definitions of child abuse, indications that it has happened, and what procedures you should follow if you suspect that one of your students has been abused. The UFT offers this workshop to its members for a $10 fee, payable in non-refundable check or money order; non-members pay $25 in non-refundable money order only. All fees to be made payable to UFT/Child Abuse. This workshop is a one-day, two-hour session and meets requirements for NYS certification. All workshops begin promptly at the starting times stated below. New York State mandates that you must be present at the start of the workshop in order to receive the state certification. The schedule and registration coupon for Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Workshops is available online.
Stress Management Workshops
One of the many challenges facing the teaching profession is learning to deal with the tensions of a classroom environment. The Stress Management Program has been created by the UFT Teacher Center to aid teachers in dealing with these pressures, both at school and at home. Some of the workshops incorporate yoga lessons as a stress-management tool. They are offered free to all UFT members. For further information, call Cathy Mozyck at the UFT, 1-212-475-3737.
Stress management workshops are offered only in the Spring and Fall semesters.
