POSITION: Guidance Counselor or Social Worker or School Psychologist Assigned as Counseling Support Services Liaison - Peer Intervention Program

The Peer Intervention Program (Article 15.I, 2007-2009 Guidance Agreement) provides peer assistance on a voluntary, confidential basis to staff who believe that their teaching competence will benefit from such assistance. Staff members work individually on an ongoing basis for up to one year with participating teachers and guidance counselors, in and out of the classroom, to improve their teaching skills, professional responsibilities and effectiveness in the classroom. In some cases, PIP supports teachers’ efforts to explore career transitions. Counseling services provide participants with additional help to enhance their professional and personal growth during the intervention period.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT:

New York City licensed, tenured guidance counselor, social worker or school psychologist with a minimum of ten years satisfactory experience under regular appointment in the New York City school system. Satisfactory experience as a classroom teacher would be preferable. Candidates must hold a New York State license for mental health practice.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Experience in clinical assessment and short-term counseling intervention with adults.
  • Experience in providing clinical advisement, consultation and supervision for other support staff.
  • Experience in developing workshops and training modules for adults.
  • Knowledge of New York City employees’ health plans and mental health benefits as well as community mental health resources.
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication.
  • Familiarity with educational and psychological outcome research.

NOTE: The following documents must be submitted with the letter of application and resume:

  1. A letter of reference from the current building/program/principal or site supervisor
  2. A letter of reference from the current U.F.T. chapter leader (or district representative)
  3. Letters of reference from two other current staff members who are knowledgeable about the applicant’s counseling skills
  4. Copy of New York State license for mental health practice

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide individual assessment and short-term counseling and/or intervention for participants in the Peer Intervention Program.
  • Provide clinical advisement, consultation and supervision for intervenors and other support staff.
  • Provide appropriate mental health referrals • Establish appropriate linkages with community mental health resources and mental health benefits personnel.
  • Develop psychology-oriented, skills-based workshops and training modules for intervenors.
  • Provide educationally and behaviorally-focused group counseling experiences for teachers and support staff.
  • Help develop and implement research studies for investigation of effectiveness of peer intervention strategies and models.

SALARY: Salary commensurate with the Collective Bargaining Agreement according to title.

WORK YEAR/LOCATION: Guidance Counselor or Social Worker or Psychologist Assigned LOCATION: Position, based at UFT Headquarters, operates citywide with extensive daily travel between work sites (schools).

HOURS: As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement according to title.
