Organizational Capacity

The programs of the UFT Education Fund are uniquely qualified to operate as providers of supplemental educational services. The Teacher Center has over a quarter century of experience managing and operating diverse professional development and instructional programs that provide support for teachers and students in New York State schools under registration review (SURR) and schools identified as needing improvement and corrective action under No Child Left Behind. Our work with a majority of New York City districts and schools has provided educators, especially those who teach our most challenged students, with instruction and help in English language arts and mathematics to:

  • Close the gap in student performance among the various student populations identified in No Child Left Behind.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships between teachers, parents and the community at large.
  • Provide a range of intervention strategies and activities to help students who are performing below state levels of proficiency.

The Dial-A-Teacher program was created in response to the needs of students and their parents who need help with homework and understanding the lessons delivered during the school day. The program also supports teachers' homework assignments so their students can review and practice skills, extend classroom-based lessons, apply new knowledge in a variety of ways and come to class well prepared.

Dial-A-Teacher staff receives extensive professional development and information that includes models for student coaching, working with parents, task analysis, delivery of content areas(s) instruction, state and city curricula, standards and assessments and student-based learning. Dial-A-Teacher staff does not provide answers, but they do provide expert teaching and coaching via telephone to as many as 1500 students or parents each evening.
