Teacher in SES Program

The New York State Education Department has approved the United Federation of Teachers to be a provider of supplemental educational services under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. This service consists of tutoring groups of up to eight students, grades 2-5, in literacy and math. Students who are in Title 1 schools that have not met their performance targets for three or more consecutive years are eligible to receive this after-school service.
POSITION: TEACHER IN UFT SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES (SES) PROGRAM FOR 2005-2006 SCHOOL YEAR.
The UFT will place teachers deemed qualified for this position in a pool of eligible applicants. The UFT will determine final selection of teachers for this program based upon the number of eligible schools, eligible students and parent selection of the UFT as a provider of SES services. This information will be available in the August or September 2005.
LOCATION: Various Title 1 school sites in Districts 5, 7, 18, 27 and 31. Final sites will depend upon school status and student eligibility under No Child Left Behind guidelines.
TIME: 3:30 to 5:00, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, beginning fall 2005.
N. B. This is not a New York City Department of Education per session activity. Compensation for this program is not pensionable, nor are teachers covered by the terms of the UFT/DOE collective bargaining agreement. Teachers selected for this position will be employees of the UFT SES Program during these hours of employment.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Currently employed as a full-time teacher in a New York City public school.
- Possession of a regular New York City license as a TEACHER. (Licenses preferred are Common Branch, Reading, Special Education, English as a Second Language, Bilingual Common Branch.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least five years of satisfactory classroom teaching experience in New York City public schools in grades 2-5.
- Satisfactory record of attendance and punctuality.
- Familiarity with Voyageur/Passport literacy program and/or Everyday Math program.
- Demonstrated knowledge of varied instructional strategies for working with small groups of students performing below state and city levels of proficiency.
- Demonstrated understanding of standards-based teaching, learning and assessment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide tutoring to groups of no more than eight students in the areas of literacy and/or math.
- Use instructional strategies designed to help students performing at Level 1 meet standards.
- Meet with parents to discuss student progress.
- Participate in all professional development sessions related to the program
- Maintain student attendance and progress reports and use ongoing assessments to plan tutoring services.
SALARY: $50.00 per hour.
