5-10
YEARS PRIOR TO RETIREMENT:
Call
our borough office to make an appointment for a preliminary pension
consultation with one of our trained advisors.
Attend "Ready-Or-Not" seminars.
These seminars prepare you for all aspects of retirement. Check dates in
the NY Teacher.
3-5 YEARS
PRIOR TO RETIREMENT:
- Call our borough office to make another
appointment for a preliminary pension consultation with one of our
trained advisors.
- Carefully review your Comprehensive
Annual Statement (CAS) to determine if there remains any prior service
that needs to be claimed and contact the Teachers Retirement System of
the City of New York, 55 Water Street, New York, NY 10041 to correct
these discrepancies.

MONTHS PRIOR TO RETIREMENT:
Make
an appointment for a final consultation. Call our UFT Central Pension
Office (212-598-6866) to set up this important meeting. If scheduling
permits, you may be able to have your appointment in any borough UFT
office. It is advisable that you arrange to bring your spouse or
domestic partner to become informed about those decisions, which must be
made in conjunction with retirement.
4 MONTHS
PRIOR TO RETIREMENT:
If
you are eligible for Social Security or Medicare, contact your Social
Security Office. If you are 65 years of age or older, enroll in both
Medicare Part A and Part B.
1-90 DAYS
PRIOR TO RETIREMENT:
- File your Retirement Application with
the Teachers Retirement System of the City of New York, 55 Water Street
New York, NY 10041at least one day, but NOT MORE THAN 90 days
before your retirement date.
- Forms that allow for the removal of
funds, either by loan or withdrawal of excess, must be filed no later
than one day prior to your effective retirement date.
- If you have participated in the TDA
program, forms regarding available choices must be filed no later than
one day prior to your effective retirement date.
NOTE:
The forms listed directly above may be filed together.
TERMINAL
LEAVE:
File
form OP 40 with your payroll secretary at least 30 days prior to the
onset of your leave or by June 1st if your leave begins in September.
DURING
MONTH PRIOR TO RETIREMENT:
- File OP 44 with your school secretary to
receive termination pay for days remaining in Cumulative Absence
Reserve. (C.A.R.)
- Remind your school secretary to file
"Final Entitlement" form.
- Fill out ERB98 to waive or continue
health insurance and check the Optional Benefits Rider yes box. Return
it to your school secretary and retain the member's copy for your
records.
AT
RETIREMENT:
Fill
out your RTC-UFT membership card and mail it to the UFT, 52 Broadway,
New York, NY 10004 (attention Membership Department).
AT
RETIREMENT OR WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF RETIREMENT DATE:
Fill
out the RTC-UFT Supplemental Health Insurance Plan (S.H.I.P.)
application cards and mail them, with your check.
WITHIN
4 MONTHS OF RETIREMENT:
You
will receive your first pension check. Shortly after receiving this
check, you will receive a "Statement of Benefits" letter from
TRS that further defines and explains the benefit you will receive.
FOLLOWING
RETIREMENT:
- Notify TRS if you are planning to work
for a public employer in New York State or New York City. File
relevant forms (see "Rules for Working Retirees" found in
the New Retiree Kit).
- Notify TRS if you do not wish to have
payroll deductions for federal tax or wish to change the withholding
deduction rate.
- Notify TRS by filing "Electronic
Fund Transfer" card if you want automatic deposit of your pension
check (cards are available from TRS or the UFT Retired Teachers'
Chapter).
- Read your UFT Retiree Handbook carefully
and use as a future resource.
- Participate in outreach and educational
activities at any borough office.
