Help for New Teachers

The UFT New Teacher Consultant Initiative helps newcomers navigate the tricky and confusing byways of the New York City school bureaucracy.

Groups of eight to 10 new teachers are paired with a UFT veteran to help them cope with the complexities of the school system as well as answer basic questions:

How to develop exciting lesson plans.
What is effective classroom management.
Where can you go for help to improve your teaching skills?
What services does the union offer for professional development?
How does the pension system work?
What health plans are available?
How do you read that confusing salary chart?

There is an initial consultation meeting and then the consultants are available all year long for advice as needed.

The teachers who participated in previous years give the program rave reviews.
