If you are an in-service member or Federation of Nurses member facing a health-related crisis, the UFT's Health and Cancer HelpLine may be able to help with:
- Coping with a cancer diagnosis.
- Getting a medical leave from work.
- Selecting physicians.
- Dealing with the stress of financial indebtedness.
- Caring for a frail, elderly parent.
- Finding a marriage or family counselor.
- Locating a substance abuse treatment program.
The UFT HelpLine's experienced, full-time social worker and peer counselors provide a "listening ear" and practical assistance in finding resources and services, within the union and your community.
All conversations are strictly confidential.
Helpline staff work closely with other UFT service units- including Paraprofessional, Retiree, Peer Intervention and Victim Support Program social services programs; as well as the UFT Welfare Fund, which oversees benefits for school-based members; and the Federation of Nurses/UFT and its Benefit Fund.
Contacts are primarily by phone, but counselors can also schedule in-person appointments as needed at UFT headquarters at 52 Broadway, Manhattan .
The Helpline is open year-round, Monday Through Friday, from 10 a.m to 6p.m. (10-5 in the summer).
