Welcome to the UFT
The United Federation of Teachers is a unique labor union. We’re the largest union local in the country, representing more than 130,000 members, including almost 20,000 paraprofessionals. Our paraprofessionals, teachers, guidance counselors and other non-supervisory educators work for the New York City public school system to provide a quality education for the city’s children. We’re also a professional organization that supports you throughout what we hope will be a lifelong career. We welcome you as a member and hope to help you succeed.
This booklet lists a large array of services geared to smoothing your way through the demands of your career. As you gain experience and confidence, we hope that you’ll welcome the opportunities for professional growth that we provide. You can start with union-sponsored programs, conferences and committees and go on to such opportunities as our Career Training Program, which has guided more than 7,000 paraprofessionals through the process of becoming certified teachers.
And, when it’s time to retire, we’ll sustain you with educational and social programs, as well as excellent pension and health benefits. The Retiree Chapter can vouch for that.
As this booklet will show, the UFT goes all out for every single member, providing a range of services that meets your needs. From the first day you set foot in the classroom, throughout your career, to well beyond retirement, the union will fight for you, support you and help you succeed at the important task of educating our children.
