Drugs: What Every Parent Should Know

HELP IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR SCHOOL
Every community school district and high school in New York City has a drug program and a drug counselor available to offer a variety of services to public school students right in their schools. The drug counselors are experienced and well-trained, and they can help you figure out whether your child is using drugs and, if so, what kind of help he or she needs.
They might, for example, offer counseling to your child—alone, in a small group, or even with you and the rest of your family. They might get your son or daughter involved in other appropriate school-based services. Or they might refer him or her to outside agencies or treatment centers, if that is needed.
These drug counselors, as well as guidance counselors, teachers and other school staff, are also reaching out to students, advising them about the dangers of drugs and helping them to choose positive alternatives.
But the main thing is that they are there, in the schools, and readily available to help you and your child deal with problems related to (or leading toward) drug or alcohol abuse. Any calls or visits you might make are strictly confidential.
In this pamphlet you will find the names and phone numbers of all drug program contacts.
