ERGONOMICS FOR THE PARAPROFESSIONAL AND OTHER SCHOOL STAFF
WHAT IS ERGONOMICS?
Ergonomics is a muti-disciplinary science which emphasizes the importance of designing the job to fit the worker, instead of forcing the worker to fit the job. Ideally, ergonomics helps to make the situation safer by preventing injuries and illnesses, and makes working more pleasant by reducing physical and mental stress. Paraprofessionals and others within a school environment who perform lifting, bending, pushing, placing, carrying, holding and lowering on a daily basis are at risk of getting a Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD) or Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). These conditions occur gradually over a period of time (weeks, months or even years) and create strains and/or tension on body parts such as joints, muscles, nerves, tendons and bones.
The packet handed out at our training contains information that will provide you with essential ergonomic principals. Following the instructions will help in preparation, solve, and prevent workplace injuries and illnesses in the future. Sometimes even minor ergonomic changes in the tasks of your profession, or workplace design can make significant improvements in workers’ comfort, health, and safety.
