On Friday February 15, 2007 the Bronx New Teacher Advisory committee hosted a Mardi Gras celebration for new teachers at the Bronx Borough Office. There may have been a snow storm outside but the new teachers made sure that there was a New Orleans like atmosphere inside. They were treated to T-shirts and beads for the festive occasion. Jose Vargas, Bronx Borough Representative, was pleased, “While we offer many professional services to our new members, it is important for them to feel at home here at the office. This event helps us to achieve that goal,” he said.
The Bronx New Teacher Advisory Committee’s objective is to be the driving force behind the Bronx Borough Office’s movement to better serve the interest of new teachers. “It was great to be able to socialize with my colleagues in a more relaxed setting,” said Mercedes Lorenzo, a special education teacher at the Bronx High School of Law, Government and Justice. “I hope that we can have more of these types of events in the future.”
