Dear New Teacher,
Welcome to the UFT Queens Borough Office! We're glad that you've joined us and the over 100,000 professionals who make up this union and who fight every day on behalf of students, parents and teachers in New York City.
We know that the first years of teaching here in the city can be both challenging and rewarding. Some of you may feel overwhelmed, others a lack of respect and others excited about working in a great school with great colleagues. But no matter how you're doing (and we hope you're doing good!) or whether you're having trouble dealing with the DOE bureaucracy, trying to figure out the best way to reach that certain student, or not sure if your pay check is correct the UFT can help. Here at your union you'll find specially trained colleagues, most of them also full-time teachers, who can help you with a question about certification, your health plan benefits, maternity leave or that lesson that you're not sure about. We'll respond to your questions and concerns quickly and clearly. We'll give you materials, resources and strategies you can use in your classroom. And we're also here to learn from you and to listen to your suggestions about how we can serve you even better. You can drop in, e-mail or call. We're here to help!
New teachers are the future of this union and we're looking forward to seeing you at our new teacher meetings, at our workshops and at our special new teacher events. The role that teachers are expected to play make our profession both exciting and exhausting. We know new teachers are very busy trying to meet requirements, navigating the school system and trying to become the best teacher they can be. By becoming an active member of your union is one of the wisest investments you can make. It will add immeasurably to your career, get you the information you need and give you a powerful voice, along with over 100,000 other union members about what happens in this city's schools.
Once again welcome to the UFT family and wishing you great success throughout your career.
Sincerely yours,
Rona Freiser
