Door-knocking campaign begins

Door-knocking campaign beginsLouisa Fletcher-Pacheco

Don’t be surprised if a fellow UFT member comes knocking at your door! UFT members are going door to door to discuss the value of the union in person with every UFT member. The UFT launched the effort in November to alert members to the threat posed by the Janus v. AFSCME case, now before the U.S. Supreme Court. The lawsuit, backed by right-wing billionaires, seeks to kneecap unions and take away the hard-won rights and benefits of union members. Daniel Holstein (above, at left, meeting with a member), a math teacher at Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day HS, said he hadn’t participated in union activities before, but joined the group of members doing door-knocking given the threat. “I think it’s so important that we take responsibility for the union because it’s our vehicle for fighting back against attacks on workers,” Holstein said. “It was really, believe it or not, an exciting way to spend a few hours — meeting other educators, hearing some common themes and learning from their experiences as well.” The union’s goal is to visit the homes of all UFT members by June.
