Schools to close for Lunar New Year

News Stories

The 2015–16 New York City public school calendar was revised on June 23 when it was announced that schools would close on Feb. 8, 2016, in observance of Lunar New Year.

No workdays were added to the school year. Instead, the Department of Education consolidated two half days that had been designated for staff administrative work — of which neither could count toward the minimum for students — into a single full day.

Wednesday, June 8, will no longer be a clerical half day, as it was originally scheduled; instead, it will be a regular school day.

June 14 — formerly a clerical half day — will become a full clerical day, with students in elementary school, middle school and District 75 school programs not in attendance.

“We pledged to families we would keep working until we made Lunar New Year an official school holiday, and today we are keeping that promise,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Earlier this spring, the DOE had already added Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as official school holidays. Schools will be closed on Sept. 24 in observance of Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Fitr will fall on July 5, 2016.
