VP testifies in support of mayor’s pre-K plan

UFT Vice President for Elementary Schools Karen Alford reiterated the union’s endorsement of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s universal full-day prekindergarten plan in testimony before the City Council committees on education and women’s issues on Feb. 11.

“Providing families with access to universal, high-quality, full-day pre-K is among the most important things we can do to help prepare young children for school and beyond, especially for those living in poor communities,” Alford testified.

Alford also spoke in support of the mayor’s plan to establish a dedicated funding source for the program with a tax on the wealthiest New York City residents.

“Creating a new revenue stream for these programs is crucial; draining stretched resources from existing education budgets is not the answer,” she said.
