City Council votes to extend term limits

The New York City Council voted, 29 to 22, on Oct. 23 to extend term limits, a result that allows Mayor Bloomberg to run for a third term next year.

UFT President Randi Weingarten responded with the following statement:

The UFT has historically opposed term limits, but believed that given this issue went before the voters twice, that a public referendum would have been the most appropriate way to change the law. That being said, the Council has spoken, and we deeply respect people on both sides of this issue. We appreciate that for many, it was a difficult decision that required a great deal of thoughtful deliberation. It’s time to move forward and tackle the major challenges we face, namely the economic crisis and its potentially devastating impact on the classroom. Ultimately, we all share the same goal: to protect and enhance the quality of education in this City.
