UFT President Randi Weingarten on Gov. Spitzer’s State of the State Address January 3, 2007

“Eliot Spitzer brings a fresh energy -- one that befits our state's reputation as the one of big ideas and accomplishments for all its people. The vision of one New York is one that everyone can embrace. The real issue is making it happen.

“We applaud Governor Spitzer’s commitment to education, particularly his specific call for smaller class sizes and universal pre-k for every 4-year-old in the state – things we have advocated for years, but which have not happened. We have always called for charter school reform, including being open to an increase in the number of charter schools, as long as there are reforms in the charter law protecting children who go to public schools from budget cuts and allowing teachers to have a meaningful role -- and an unfettered right to union representation.”
