Sen. Edward Kennedy dies at 77
Aug 26, 2009 3:07 PM
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy died of brain cancer on Aug. 25 at his home in Hyannis Port, Mass. He was 77. Last spring the UFT gave its highest honor, the John Dewey award, to Sen. Kennedy for his record of advocacy for education.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew responded to the news with the following statement:
For decades Senator Kennedy has been one of America’s great icons. But more importantly, he made a difference in people’s lives. He always fought vigorously and was a champion of civil rights, education and the rights of workers. Senator Kennedy was a role model and he will be greatly missed by the United Federation of Teachers family.
