Eliot Spitzer resigns as governor

Mar 12, 2008 3:28 PM

Saying that he was “deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected of me,”  Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned on March 12. The resignation will be effective on March 17, and Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson will be sworn in to replace him.

UFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement in response:

“This is a tragedy for Eliot Spitzer and his family, and my heart goes out to his wife and daughters during what must be an excruciating time.

“We extend our strong support and best wishes to David Paterson as he assumes the role of Governor. As State Senate Minority Leader, David Paterson reached across the aisle to work well with Republican Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, while at the same time making the Senate Democrats a force to be reckoned with. New York State is fortunate to have such an admirable and inspiring public servant during such a trying time. His strength of character, good humor, and compassion are vital assets for the challenges that lie ahead.”
