Statement From UFT President Randi Weingarten June 20, 2006

“This is one of the reasons why we are pushing a back-to-basics program with lowering class size as its centerpiece.  We have hard-working school teachers in New York City’s high schools, but making them carry a student load of 170 a day sends a signal that we are not serious about increasing the graduation rate.  If we want our students to succeed at the highest levels we have to reduce class size and ensure that our classrooms are safe and free of disruptive students so the overwhelming number of kids who want to learn can have the opportunity to learn.”
