UFT endorses Bill de Blasio for public advocate

Cites de Blasio’s proven track record championing public education

The UFT on Sept. 3 endorsed Bill de Blasio, Democratic candidate for public advocate. In making the announcement, UFT President Michael Mulgrew praised de Blasio’s proven track record of championing public education and the needs of working-class New Yorkers.

“The UFT is proud to endorse Bill de Blasio, who has distinguished himself by consistently fighting the good fight on behalf of better public schools and working families,” said Mulgrew. “He is a strong leader, and New Yorkers will benefit from having such a fierce and knowledgeable advocate in their corner.”

“Bill’s willingness to tackle tough issues and causes has been particularly impressive,” continued Mulgrew, “as has his desire to make building community partnerships a top priority. His work on behalf of educators, especially early childhood educators, and the students they serve, has been critical, as has his work to preserve safety net services that so many New Yorkers are depending on during these difficult economic times. To be an effective public advocate, one must not be afraid of speaking truth to power, and Bill always speaks the truth.”

“I am extremely proud to receive the endorsement of the United Federation of Teachers,” said de Blasio. “Teachers and home-based child care workers play an indispensable role in providing our City’s children a better future, and as public advocate, I will continue to stand up for their needs and rights. Together, with the over 200,000 teachers and providers UFT represents, we can make real change in this election and in reforming our City's education system.”
