UFT endorses John Liu for city comptroller

The UFT on Sept. 1 endorsed John Liu, Democratic candidate for city comptroller. In making the announcement, UFT President Michael Mulgrew praised Liu’s exemplary record as a smart fiscal steward as well as his work to enhance and protect the lives and livelihoods of working families around New York City.

“John’s vision, strong leadership skills and fiscal know-how make him the best candidate in this race in a field of very strong contenders,” said Mulgrew. “Those attributes will be crucial during this time of economic uncertainty. The enormity of the challenges ahead require someone who can bring people together and find smart and responsible solutions. John has proven that he can and will be that person.”

“John is committed to strong public school communities and has had a solid record on education issues throughout his distinguished career,” continued Mulgrew. “He recognizes the importance of oversight, transparency and fiscal responsibility, and has never been afraid to take on the Department of Education or City Hall. John also steadfastly supports and defends working families, and has been a forceful voice in the fight to protect important safety-net services from devastating budget cuts. Once he is elected, New Yorkers can count on Liu to be a relentless and dedicated public servant who will work hard on their behalf.”

“The UFT is a staunch advocate for education reform and a powerful voice for children, parents and teachers. I’m proud to have worked with the union on many issues over the years, and I am humbled and honored to receive its support,” said Liu. “I look forward to standing with Michael Mulgrew, in his new role as union president, and the UFT membership to continue the fight for healthy and safe learning environments for students, securing better resources for teachers and advocating for higher, quality education in all our schools. Together, we will hold the Department of Education, and we will ensure that our tax dollars and available resource are invested wisely for our children’s future.”
