Resolution on Absent Teacher Reserves

Whereas, there are hundreds of UFT members who have become ATRs and who cannot secure permanent positions because of the closing of schools, excessing or other reasons; and

Whereas, there are numerous complaints from members in this position who have been unable to get interviews and transfers under the open market plan; and

Whereas, many of our members are frustrated, angry, feel powerless and are demeaned by this process; and

Whereas, Chancellor Klein stated during a recent interview that he would like to get rid of these members who “can’t” find jobs; therefore be it

Resolved, that the union petition the Dept. of Education to declare a moratorium on hiring new employees until all excessed employees in those of title are placed.

Passed at the Nov. 7, 2007 UFT Delegate Assembly.
