Gender identity resolution (12-07)

Whereas, the federal employment law does not currently protect Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender employees. LGBT people can be discriminated against or fired because of sexual orientation or gender identity; and

Whereas, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), as introduced last April 2007 (H.R. 2015), would protect all LGBT people from job discrimination; and

Whereas, leadership in the House of Representatives announced in late September that they were moving forward with a non-discrimination substitute bill stripped of protections for transgender people; and

Whereas, some House leaders are planning to move forward with a bill (H.R. 3685) lacking protections on the basis of “gender identity”; therefore be it

Resolved, that the UFT oppose any LGBT civil rights language that does not include gender identity.

Passed at the Dec. 12, 2007 UFT Delegate Assembly.
