Parent-teacher conference date switch

Since the primary elections for political office in New York State are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 13, the evening parent-teacher conferences for elementary schools for the 2018-19 school year have been moved to Monday, Sept. 17.

Teacher's Choice for 2018-19 school year

Following a strong lobbying effort by the UFT, the City Council maintained the previous year’s big increase in funding for Teacher’s Choice in the city budget. As a result, eligible UFT-represented educators will be reimbursed the same amounts as last school year for materials and supplies for the 2018–19 school year.

Your new UFT membership card and app

The UFT mailed a new membership card with a member ID number to every UFT member in May. The UFT app for members only is now available for download, too.

Apply for a sabbatical leave by March 19

Eligible teachers who want to study to enhance their teaching skills have until Monday, March 19, to submit an application on SOLAS for a study sabbatical for the 2018–19 school year.

NYSUT journal seeks articles

The 12th volume of NYSUT’s academic journal Educator’s Voice is seeking proposals for articles that showcase practices or programs in any grades on the topic of culturally responsive teaching. The deadline is June 15.

9/11 Tribute Museum seeks educators

The 9/11 Tribute Museum in Lower Manhattan is seeking 9/11-connected educators to share their stories with visitors in the museum and on walking tours on the Memorial Plaza.

Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) spring workshops

The UFT offers required DASA training at UFT headquarters in Manhattan and in the union’s borough offices throughout the school year.

A dental plan for noncovered relatives of UFT members

The UFT’s Direct Access Dental Plan provides access to quality dental care at a discounted rate to UFT members’ family members not covered by the regular UFT dental plan.

Work expenses, UFT dues are tax-deductible

If you are an eligible educator, you can deduct up to $250 of any unreimbursed expenses in 2017 for books, supplies computer equipment and supplementary materials you use in the classroom. Your union dues are also eligible as a miscellaneous deduction.

Jan. 14 is the deadline for spending Teacher’s Choice funds and submitting receipts for purchases.
