Know your benefits
A house fire kills a beloved teacher. A student dies of illness or in a violent incident. An educator experiences a workplace assault or robbery. These and other traumatic events take place regularly in the life of a school system that comprises well over a million students and adults. Did you know that there’s a place to turn to for support — both on- and off-site — when tragedy strikes?
If you are retiring, you must maintain your NYSUT membership as a retiree in order to continue participating in NYSUT Member Benefits-endorsed programs. To do this, you must continue membership with the UFT as a retiree.
In the event of a member’s death, the UFT Welfare Fund provides a benefit which is payable on a decreasing scale to the beneficiary(ies) of in-service members. This benefit is in addition to any privately held insurance coverage the member may have.
Adobe Photoshop CS 5 — regularly $999; extended student and teacher edition, for educators, only $199! Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 — regularly $539.95; for educators, only $89.95! These are some of the bargains that teachers are entitled to. Even building a teacher website to help reach parents and students can be free or very low-cost.
If you and your spouse or domestic partner are both UFT members, you don’t have to choose one or the other’s benefits — you have the benefit of both when it comes to certain Welfare Fund benefits. With special coordination of benefits, you can receive dental, optical, prescription drug and hearing aid benefits from each other’s coverage.
The UFT Welfare Fund provides a hearing aid benefit of $1,000, as of Jan. 1, 2010. The benefit provides one hearing aid every three years (counted from the date of your last service). The benefit includes a comprehensive audiological evaluation, ear impression and the required visits necessary for the proper fitting/use of the hearing aid.
The first thing you should do when you are thinking about buying new eyeglasses or contact lenses for yourself and/or someone in your family is to call the UFT Welfare Fund’s automated forms hotline at 1-212-539-0539 and request an optical certificate.
At one time or another, we all experience challenges in our personal or professional lives. MAP provides trained, professional counselors who can guide in-service members through short-term counseling, at no cost.
Are you or a close family member struggling to cope with a health-related problem? The UFT has created social services to help that are free, strictly confidential and only a phone call away.
Train. Bus. Subway. Ferry. Paratransit. Parking your car at the commuter station. If you travel to work by public transportation, you can take part in the Commuter Benefits Program for UFT members, which now goes beyond New York City to cover the tristate area.
Workers’ Compensation can provide valuable benefits if you are a paraprofessional, school nurse or occupational or physical therapist and have a work-related injury or occupational illness. If you are hurt on the job, there are certain procedures you should follow to ensure that you get all the benefits that you are entitled to.
Are you pregnant or planning to start a family? You should know that you have the right to take a leave of absence at any time during your pregnancy with medical documentation or during your baby’s first years.
In-service UFT members have the protection of a short-term disability plan that can provide valuable income when personal illness renders them temporarily unable to work. (This benefit does not provide coverage for injuries-in-the-line-of-duty or no-fault claims, which provide their own set of benefits.)
Do you spend a lot each month on child care? Is your out-of-pocket spending on health care adding up? You may be able to save hundreds of dollars a year in federal and Social Security taxes by enrolling in the city’s Flexible Spending Accounts program. The program allows public school educators and other municipal employees to use pre-tax earnings to cover dependent-care costs or medical expenses not covered by your health plan.
Like all New Yorkers, you want to get it for less....check out these bargains for educators from the DOE.
The UFT Welfare Fund provides dental benefits through three types of programs: the Scheduled Benefit Plan, which offers more choices but can entail out-of-pocket expenses; Dentcare, a no-cost dental HMO; and the Florida Dental Discount Plan for year-round Florida residents.
The annual open enrollment period for the UFT Welfare Fund dental plans is from Sept. 1 through Oct. 15. Members who wish to change their dental plans must submit a dental enrollment/transfer form to the UFT Welfare Fund. Any newly selected plan will become effective Nov. 1.
As we head into summer, some of you will be heading out of town or even out of the country. Just remember to take care of your maintenance prescription needs before you pack your bags! For emergencies, always carry your Medco prescription ID card.
As we enter the holiday season, many UFT members will pack their bags and head out to join family and friends in hometowns or vacation locations all over the globe. They will return home with photos, memorable experiences and renewed bonds. But sometimes, travel can also present unpredictable circumstances.
Read on for some advice on how best to maximize your prescription drug benefit, whether you’re at a doctor’s visit or the pharmacy, or determining how best to order your maintenance medications.
