Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security must have more anniversaries Summertime had two important retirement anniversary celebration dates. July 30 was the 47th birthday of Medicare and Medicaid. Both programs were enacted into law during the Johnson administration in 1965.

Suggestion to new members — and other notes

To those of you who are newly appointed to a position in the school system this fall, congratulations! Regularly appointed personnel are mandated into the Teachers’ Retirement System and will soon see 3 percent deductions from their salary checks. You will, a little later, receive a new member enrollment kit from the retirement system. We will write more about this when they are sent.

Every year, the Employee Benefit Research Institute releases its Retirement Confidence Survey, which provides an overview of the issue nationally. In its 2012 report, the institute found that job insecurity, debt and lack of savings weigh on workers’ confidence about retirement.

Changes needed to secure funding for Medicare Part A
Long-range trends in Medicare costs are continually rising. Medicare spending is growing for many of the same reasons that health care spending is growing — high use of services, costly new medical technology and ever-higher prices for providers. Additionally, the aging of the baby-boomer generation is resulting in a rapidly increasing number of individuals eligible to enroll in Medicare.

Social Security is not in crisis

The Social Security Board of Trustees on April 23 released its annual report on the financial health of the Social Security Trust Funds as the nation has started to slowly recover from its worst financial crisis since the 1930s. Its figures indicate that nothing immediate or drastic needs to be done to securely fund Social Security.
