Open Market Transfer season has begun!

The 2007 Open Market Transfer period has officially begun as principals begin posting vacancies on the Department of Education’s Web site.

Members who are seeking transfers from their current schools can apply online for vacancies that become available during the coming months.  Individuals can apply for any and all vacancies for which they are appropriately licensed.

This plan is designed to offer wider choices to all pedagogues and paraprofessionals and help facilitate good matches between current employees seeking new positions and schools seeking to fill vacancies. During last year’s Open Market Transfer period, more than 2,700 members in all titles got transfers – an unprecedented number.

Members who are not happy with their current school or principal for whatever reason or who want to shorten their commute can use the open market transfer plan to apply for another position. This plan, created in the 2005 contract, replaces the seniority, integration, clinical and SBO transfer plans. All schools now use this new plan, which should provide more transfer opportunities by requiring that all vacancies get posted. Individuals can apply to any and all vacancies for which they are appropriately licensed. The new plan also redefines the term “vacancy” in such a way as to ensure that new appointees are no longer vulnerable to being bumped from their schools.

Job postings will be listed on the left-hand navigation menu of the DOE Web site so you can read the “vacancy details” regarding each job opportunity.

The UFT has written a short “Q&A” which addresses the most commonly asked questions about the transfer plan.
