At PS 178 in Inwood, Manhattan, it was all hands on deck to raise the alarm about the threat posed by the Nov. 7 ballot referendum on a state constitutional convention. During her monthly lunchtime chapter meeting on Sept. 20, Chapter Leader Eileen Pierce and members of her chapter filled out postcards pledging to contact five friends or neighbors to remind them to vote NO on the proposal, which will appear on the back of the ballot. “We need to spread the word about what this means to us as a union and how important it is for us to vote no,” Pierce said. Next up, Pierce’s members plan to text five friends and encourage them to text five others — a “grassroots” way to get the message out, Pierce said. above: Members from PS 178 show off the pledge cards they filled out.
