Six New York City public school science educators were honored by the Siemens Foundation at the annual Science Teacher Awards gala held on May 13 at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing, Queens. Recognized for “going the extra mile to motivate and inspire their students,” the honorees — there were 10 in all from schools in the city and Long Island — were praised for encouraging students to value scientific achievements. They each received a Siemens Science Teacher Award with trophy and case. The foundation seeks to nurture tomorrow’s scientists and engineers by supporting outstanding students and teachers. Established in 1998, it contributes nearly $4 million annually in support of math, science and technology education from grade school through graduate school in the United States. This year’s winners from New York City public schools were Alexander Guzman, East Flatbush Community Research School, Brooklyn; Talia Javid, Central Park East HS in Manhattan; Carol Keil and Joseph Sweeney, both from PS 11 in Queens; Betty Picpican, IS 68 in Brooklyn; and C. Rajeshwari Menon from IS 195 in Manhattan.
