The 13th annual New York State Education Department Awards ceremony, held at the Brooklyn Marriott on May 28, honored schools and individuals whose achievements exemplify the theme of “Challenges and Possibilities: Commitment to Excellence for All Students.” The awards, though lacking the public glamour of an Academy Award, Emmy, Grammy or Tony, represent triumphs so satisfying to those who have earned them that they wouldn’t trade them for all the glitz and statuettes in Hollywood because they symbolize dedication to quality education for all children. The city public schools honored for being removed from registration review were IS 219 and JHS 117 in the Bronx, JHS 265 in Brooklyn and the Legacy School for Integrated Studies in Manhattan. Teachers recognized as Title I Board Certified were Vanessa Holder of PS 226, Diana Behan of PS 23 and Eric Lincoln of MS 223 in the Bronx; Jessica Lynch of PS 102 and Eva DiDia of PS 85 in Queens; Christine Olson of the James Baldwin School in Manhattan; and Nancy Mulligan and Jennifer Bocchino of PS 58 and Tara DeGrado, Vanessa Freundlich and Alyssa Longo of PS 60 on Staten Island.
