Art teacher Liza Wax is always looking for ways to motivate her young students. That’s why she’s so proud that one of her 6th-graders at JHS 117 in the Bronx, Edison Sanchez, is the winner in the citywide art competition Our Schools Our Voice sponsored by the Department of Education. Edison’s colored pencil/watercolor “Crazy City” was chosen from among 265 entries. His work and the work of two other students at his school — 6th-grader Edward Amoateng for “My Beautiful Creature” and 8th-grader Jennifer Adjei for “Sioux Wedding Day” — will be exhibited in the New York State Art Teachers Association annual Legislative Art Exhibit in Albany. Wax, who came to teaching from careers in textiles and sculpture, used works by Klee, Kandinsky and Delaunay to help get her students’ artistic juices flowing.
Edison proudly shows off his winning creation surrounded by students and (from left) teacher Edith Ezeudu, UFT 9 District Representative Claudia Polite, Chapter Leader Carolyn Champion, Wax (in white smock) and Principal Delise Jones.
In the art room, Wax encourages students working on wax and charcoal drawings to honor Women’s History Month.
