Georgia Miller-McCorkle, who teaches early childhood education at PS 140 at 518, Brooklyn, was one of 17 recipients of the “Women Who Dare To Be Different Award” at the 18th celebration of the Women’s Caucus at the Fleur de Lis restaurant in Ridgewood, Queens, on March 15. The annual event is sponsored by Congressman Edolphus Towns. The awards are presented to women who have shown leadership in the fields of education, community service, communications, health, medicine, labor and religion. Miller-McCorkle started her career at PS 140 as a paraprofessional. Since 1989 she has worked with students in special education, covering many subject areas including science, art and social studies. From 2000-2006 she was the school’s dean. She also assists in the production of the school’s UFT chapter newsletter. “After the excitement of my being dignified by this prestigious award leveled off, I remembered my favorite quotation from Maya Angelou: ‘All great achievements require time,’” Miller-McCorkle said. “My congressional recognition is proof of that and it also encourages me to continue with all that I have been doing.”
