District 1 staffers join the union president outside the Chinatown restaurant for a group photo.
District 1 filled the Sunshine Seafood Restaurant in Chinatown on Oct. 21 for a Meet the President afternoon. UFT President Michael Mulgrew brought members up to date on the many issues they had come to hear about. He hit the economy hard, describing the impact that the $223.2 million in threatened midterm cuts would have on schools, jobs and negotiations. Acknowledging the fact that the economy is bad, he said students must not be the scapegoats in efforts to balance the budget. He also outlined the union’s plans to create a volunteer army to fight the cuts and get the message of the devastation that the cuts would cause out to the community. In the face of all the challenges to education, he called for solidarity. “We’re all in this together,” he said.
