A “Stress Buster” wellness seminar, featuring a yoga instructor, a relaxation and imagery therapist, a Reiki master and a health consultant, was sponsored by the UFT Welfare Fund Health and Cancer Helpline and Cancer Advisory committee at UFT headquarters on Nov. 3. Demonstrations of the various techniques allowed participants to learn how they can be incorporated into their daily lives and personal routines. The American Heart Association provided materials on incorporating lifestyle changes to promote heart health and also made cookbooks containing 46 healthy soul food recipes available to members who pledged to adopt healthy lifestyles in order to prolong their lives. The program was developed by Gianna L. Ruddock, Health and Cancer Helpline director/Cancer Advisory Committee co-chair, and Patricia Quinlan, Advisory Committee member, with the help of Ester Liss-Turner, Helpline counselor/Cancer Advisory Committee co-chair.
Yoga instructor Deborah M. Cicala, RN, demonstrates therapeutic yoga on fellow presenter Aurora Ocampo, RN. The technique is completely passive for the recipient.
Geordie Numata, the Reiki instructor, demonstrates on volunteer Iuminada Ramirez, a paraprofessional at PS 811 in Manhattan.
For attendees the seminar was entertaining as well as informative.
