Political action group honors AFT’s McElroy
May 8, 2008 1:34 PM
AFT President Ed McElroy was honored by the New York Chapter of Americans for Democratic Action at its 2008 Roosevelt Day Dinner on April 8. On hand to celebrate with McElroy and his family were leaders and members of the UFT and NYSUT, including respective presidents Randi Weingarten and Dick Iannuzzi. Founded in 1947, the ADA is a veteran liberal, democratic organization that describes itself as “dedicated to individual liberty and economic justice, working to advance civil rights at home and human rights abroad, and promoting the general welfare in a world of peace.” Weingarten congratulated the group on choosing to honor McElroy, who recently announced that he will retire at the end of his term this July. Weingarten said the choice was fitting. “Ed’s life is dedicated to the very same principles as are yours,” Weingarten told the group, calling him “a mentor” and congratulating him for his success in spearheading the national union’s effective political action work “through all the difficult times when George Bush and his reactionary policies dominated national politics.”
Weingarten, McElroy and Iannuzzi (standing side by side, center) are joined at the banquet by AFT members, family and friends.
