Language shouldn’t be a barrier for parents interested in their children’s educations. At Flushing HS in Queens on Oct. 18, hundreds of parents attended the UFT’s fifth annual Education Conference for Chinese-Speaking Parents on how to help their English-language-learning children. Workshops — all conducted in Mandarin Chinese — were offered on literacy and math, as well as writing, social studies, test-taking techniques and how to navigate the high school admissions process. A key speaker at the event was Yen Chou, the founder and president of the Chinese-American Parent-Student Council of New York City, which co-sponsored the event. Chou is also the UFT-endorsed candidate for City Council from Queens’ District 20.
