Lab specialists, science teachers and chapter leaders received chemical spill training in August at UFT headquarters in Manhattan. Under a grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the union members were given a five-day course on how to handle emergencies in their schools. They participated in mock drills that simulated small and large spills. The UFT presented the training in conjunction with the AFT. It was the seventh annual Secondary School Chemical Emergency Response training course and was intended to meet OSHA/PESH requirements for emergency response hazardous materials technicians.
