Look, up in the sky ...

Did you know that chickens can fly? Well they can — not like eagles and robins, but well enough to make it into a tree. And now the 65 educators at the UFT Humane Education Committee’s “Chickens Can Fly: Learning About Farmed Animals and Farm Sanctuaries” conference at union headquarters on Jan. 26 know it, too. Workshops geared to grade level explored “Infusing Humane Education into Early Childhood Literacy and Science Programs,” “Cultivating Compassion” and “From Tropical Forest to Factory Farm.” Teachers interested in a free “Cultivating Compassion” packet of classroom materials can call Committee Chair Sheila Schwartz at 1-212-410-3095.

Lisbet Chiriboga (left) of CS 50 in the Bronx and Ritalynn Forman, humane education specialist, take a closer look.

Early childhood educators show off the chickens that were part of the materials distributed.
