For a close-knit staff that loves their school, among the highest-performing in the city, Valentine’s Day provided the perfect theme to celebrate solidarity and dedicate a refurbished teachers’ lounge at PS 188, Queens. New chairs, microwaves and a refrigerator were purchased with City Council funds for the teachers’ lounge, which was newly adorned with donated artwork and curtains hand-made by a staff member. The school has achieved a 99 percent contribution rate to COPE, the union’s political action fund, and already has several dozen staff members signed up for the UFT’s March 19 rally against budget cuts. The school is also proud of its District 26 bequest of books to Hurricane Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. “The UFT provided lunch for the staff, courtesy of co-chapter leaders Stacy Gangi and Phyllis Berk, who have done so much for the entire school community, including providing members for the District Membership Team and the Scholarship Committee,” said UFT District 26 Representative Mary Vaccaro.
