A new centenarian

PS 164, Brooklyn, threw itself a birthday party on May 22 to celebrate the 100 years it has been serving the families of Borough Park. Students unveiled their life-size papier-mâché statue of Caesar Rodney, a member of the Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence, for whom the school is named and the school symphonic band and chorus, under the direction of Peter Mancini, entertained parents, teachers, community members and political leaders and alumni in the packed auditorium. For Chapter Leader Ellen Silberman it was a special day. “My mother went here and my father went here,” she said. “It's part of my history.” District Representative Ellen Driesen, who taught at the school, said. “It's a pleasure to return to where I started.” And for Ann Wranovix, who taught there from 1982 to 2001: “I only wish I had gone to school here. This is a wonderful place to return to.”
