Not on the run

Some of New York’s brightest are also New York’s fastest. The UFT Runners has been a team now for more than 20 years — well, running.

It has a great track record — literally. It’s won 45 Tiffany Awards, typically places in the top 10 in the International Championships, and also has had success in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge Racing Series from 1993 to 2006.

The team is made up of educators young and not-so-young, male and female, a diverse group from beginners to competitive runners, who know all about warming up, hitting the wall and cooling down.

They also know about sitting still and holding a productive committee meeting, which they did on Jan. 22 at union headquarters in Manhattan.

Committee Co-Chairs Kevin Miller of Manhattan’s PS 140 and Josephine Piccini of HS of Graphic Communication Arts updated runners on upcoming races. The group finalized the design and colors for the new banner, racing jerseys and post-race T-shirts. Also on the agenda were discussions about their Web site, database and event signage. In short, all the things to keep a team in the running.

Anyone interested in joining any of the races scheduled to take place from March to October can e-mail Miller at kevinsmiller2002@yahoo.com.

Beginners interested in UFT Runners can contact Miller as well, and walkers are also welcome.

At the UFT Runners’ Jan. 22 meeting (seated from left), Co-Chairs Kevin Miller and Josephine Piccini, Zev Steen and Director of Professional Committees George Altomare, and (standing) past committee chair Rich Orazem discuss upcoming races.
