Opa!

Dance instructor Elias Marneris does his thing.

The UFT’s Hellenic American Educators Association, honoring Greek heritage and culture, celebrated Greek Independence Day with music, dance instruction and a delectable buffet supper on March 20 at union headquarters. A special highlight was the presentation of a slide-show narrative that focused on the story of the Greek-American immigrant in the New York City area. Presented by Katherine R. Boulukos and Anastasia Nicholas, who co-founded the Greek Museum: the Center for Greek American Heritage, the show traced the untold story of this under-documented group from its arrival in New York City in the early 1800s to the present, using photographs from the museum’s archival collection. It also focused on the contributions of Greek immigrants to various trades in the metropolitan area and the unique imprint they left on various communities. Deme Savopolis, president of the association, spoke of its goal of actively serving students and the educational community with pride and vision while fostering Hellenic ideals.

Guests show off what they’ve learned.
